My experience
Proof of concept
The interesting thing about this film was exploring how to make an inclusive film. At first glance, I saw the use of subtitles as an opportunity - for hearing audiences, I can manipulate the sound of the dialogue to be an interpreted perspective of the main character. This was the basis for the the sound design of the arcade scene, in which our main character gets overwhelmed.
A concept I wanted to incorporate was muffling the mothers dialogue whenever she wasn’t facing the main character. I had this idea after working on set with Ellis, the actor for our main character. He had a cochlear implant, but it was still much easier for him if he could lip read whenever someone talked to him. In hindsight, I would have liked to emphasise this more. I also would have liked to spend more time on bringing attention to the sounds of his movements while signing.
Final Film
I was asked to help choreograph the movement scene for the final project. I learnt a lot about working with a new actor who has had no training in dance. I had to create a comfortable and open-minded space where we could swap understandings of certain moves. It helped that I had previously worked with Ellis.
