Work Life Balance

A student concept commercial for the Shelter from the Storm charity.

Director

My experience

To have the opportunity to film one of my ideas, with such an amazing, supportive crew is a wonderful experience. Only to top it all off by filming on 16mm film for the NAHEMI Kodak commercial competition. Cherry on top.

The project developed a lot from start to finish, which was a very satisfying process. The practice of letting ideas go was really refreshing and I hope to keep an open mind so I can work efficiently and solve problems effectively.

While I used to think a director was at the top of the hierarchy pyramid, my experience meant I was simply the one holding the core idea. There is an element of responsibility and spotlight that came with the title, however, the metaphor I have used is that directing felt like a sieve. The core idea and desired outcome are the mesh wiring and the director comes to the crew with those core elements. The crew brings forward ideas and the director filters them through the idea, determining the suitable elements. It’s a very collaborative process, which I found very enjoyable.
